How did you end up designing for this hardcore indi-eyewear-brand? My love affair with eyewear and Berlin started young, firstly I began my journey as an optician, then in sales, then as a buyer, so my experience goes deep. I would visit Berlin every few months to soak in the city, the music, the art, and the people. Through contacts in the optical world the opportunity arose for me to become the designer of KREUZBERGKINDER, I took it and haven’t looked back. What would you be doing if you were not into eyewear design? I´d probably attempt to be a ballerina even though I´ve not had one ballet lesson in my life. Which frame of the latest collection is your pride and joy? It´s extremely hard for me to choose a favourite frame, I love each and every one of them equally, they all have their own personality. From what material are they made? Our metal frames are made from hypoallergenic stainless steel and the acetate we use is from Mazzucchelli. Why do Kreuzbergkinder glasses make the wearer look so cool? It´s not your typical frame, they tend to be striking and attention-grabbing, that automatically gives people a confidence boost and allows them to feel ´´cool´´, in whatever way they interpret ´´cool´´ to be. What do you think: Is it ok to wear window glasses to a job interview, just to look smarter ? Personally, I have no problem with it, if people wish to accessorize themselves in a way that boosts their confidence (particularly in stressful scenarios such as an interview) then why not? Plus I feel the stereotype of spectacle wearers being automatically smart is dated, plenty of not so smart individuals have poor eyesight. Is it really a bad idea to wear sunglasses in a bank ? I mean if your purpose is to rob the bank then yes, go for it and wear Kreuzbergkinder frames too- no such thing as bad publicity. The Suspirium collection 2023 was inspired by witches and the ever-present esoteric history of Berlin. How did you come up with that idea ? For as long as I can remember I have had an admiration of witches since I was a child. Berlin is one of the darkest cities in the world, physically and spiritual, there is a lot of energy the emanates through the streets. This collection is an homage to my favourite witches from folklore and films, and Berlin is the ideal setting for witches to wander. Do you have a personal relationship in this what the average person calls the dark side of life? I naturally have always been curious about all things esoteric and across the veil, but I know my limits and I certainly know to give ´this dark side of life´ the respect it deserves, no, demands. Once you delve into this side of life and look into it, you can never be too sure who or what looks back. So, I always do sage cleanses for extra protection. The campaign images of Kreuzbergkinder are provocative, outstanding and tell stories connected with strong personalities that harmonize perfectly with the frames. It's far from Mainstream and the typical close-ups that one knows from eyewear manufacturers. Who had the idea for this and is that the secret of the success of Kreuzbergkinder? 5 years ago, the idea came about from the three founders, two experts in the field, Erez Cohen from Duke Optics in Israel, and Lior Shachar from Open Channel in Italy. Along with Gili Shani, renowned in-house photographer at infamous Kit Kat Club they formed an idea and trusted me to execute the vision with my direction and designs. What represents your current mood best? Calmy stressed. We are currently in the middle of a very important transitionary period, what with moving to a bigger showroom and taking over distribution in Italy. At the moment a lot is on my head, but I am loving the process, it means we are growing-it´s chrysalis. Is there an inspiring place you have been to, recently? I can’t think of a recent place but I can tell you about a recent event I attended, it was with the powerhouse designer Esther Perbandt. She showcased her latest collection at Berlin Fashion week, Astro Noir Lab at Kunstbibiliothek. It was a mixed reality feast for all the senses, the models moving gracefully through the crowd wearing her stunning designs, AR visual renderings projected on free standing screens, the show was accompanied by the exquisite voice of opera singer Emily D´Angelo, I´m getting goosebumps just thinking about. That was pure inspiration for me. Tell me more about what makes you passionate about eyewear: Eyewear for me is transformative, it is the final touch to a look that can make or break it. As a designer, what details do you find are most essential to the perfect pair of glasses? Clever complimentary elements are essential, but a frame that is balanced in design is without a doubt the most important. After so many years in the business, are there any “rules to live by” when hunting for the perfect pair of glasses? No real rules just be sure to get your eyes checked every 6 months, suit yourself and don’t stress out about it, as I said before, a balanced frame regardless of the aesthetic goes a long way. Your frames have very extraordinary shapes, do I have to pay special attention regarding the fit, depending on my face? Pay attention to the bridge, the width of your face, the height of your cheeks, and whether or not your eyebrows are seen. But honestly, I am not one to be fussy, if someone absolutely loves a frame, even if it isn´t the most perfect fit, why shouldn’t they go for it? To what extent is Kreuzbergkinder a brand that meets the expectations of the time? To be honest we try not to follow trends, I am inspired by the style of 70s/80s and cyber noir, it can be overwhelming to follow what is ´´in´´ at a given time, plus trends change quicker than you change your underwear. You can buy fashion, but you can’t buy style. I feel KREUZBERGKINDER is timeless and will never truly be conformed into a box. Do you think there is more untapped potential for eyewear designers when it comes to targeting non-mainstream lifestyle-niches? The internet has made it ridiculously easy for people to explore and find non-mainstream lifestyle-niches, it is simply a tap away and there´s always space for new ideas and doing things differently, people just need to get our of their comfort zones. Your booth at the opti was simply outstanding. What is important to Kreuzbergkinder when it comes to choosing their partner stores and retailers? Thank you for the compliment, we are quite proud of the new booth and the attention it received. We do research potential partner stores, to see if it makes sense, do they ´´get us´´ or are they simply looking for wall-fillers. Currently we are looking towards concept stores around the globe to collaborate with, places where they sell fashion/accessories that KREUZBERGKINDER frames will compliment and elevate. Do you have any tips for retailers on how to transform the outdated image of an optician? Honestly there´s no hope for them, that´s simply their vibe and they should own it.
Where do you see the indipendent eyewear scene in the next 3-5 years? As I said previously, there’s no excuse to wear boring eyewear anymore, those days are long gone. There is so much on the market, even more conservative frames have gotten a face lift. You can see the change even by going to the cinema, stylists make a real point when dressing the actors and they are clearly having fun when it comes to which eyewear to present. People are actively searching for the not so typical brands and are prouder to show off, so I think the only way is up for the independent eyewear scene, opportunities are abundant. An welchem inspirierenden Ort warst Du in letzter Zeit? Was liebst Du besonders an toller Eyewear?

Many people appreciate the authenticity and character of the Luis Trenker brand. Are your values like consistency, honesty and authenticity the new luxury? Values like these have unfortunately indeed become a rare and precious commodity in this day and age. But for some years now we have noticed that people's longing for consistency is increasing and that the trend is once again moving more in the direction of conscious consumption - certainly there is still a long way to go, but we firmly believe that we can make a small contribution with our philosophy. Why is identity so important? Our guiding principle has always been, "We don't just want to climb peaks, we want to leave our mark!" Identity is what makes us unique and sets us apart from the crowd - the need to express one's own identity is deeply rooted in all of us and can be experienced in abundance these days, especially in social media. But if you want to turn your back on the superficiality that prevails there, you can find other ways to give your own personality space: One of them is fashion that does not follow trends and emphasizes uniqueness. "We don't just want to climb peaks, we want to leave our mark!" What is the biggest challenge in creating a new Luis Trenker fashion collection ? Each phase in the creation of a collection has its own unique challenges: it starts with the days of meetings with our design team, where there are sometimes wild discussions and creative chaos, and ends with the adherence to timings and quality standards in production. What many people don't realize is that each of our collections has a 13-person team working at full speed for half a year to meet our own high standards. How do you have to imagine that? How does an idea become a garment? The idea is the most important basis of every collection, because we don't just want to make fashion, we want to tell a story. But from the first mood board to the finished garment is a long process: choosing the right materials and the best producers, the arrival of the first samples and the fitting on the model are just some of the steps we go through until it comes to the actual production. Your lookbooks are always special, with a look at the philosophy of the Luis Trenker brand. Where were the beautiful images taken and why are these images so important? The pictures for the new summer collection were taken at the Valparola Pass, a mountain pass that connects the provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno: A symbol of the borders that we sometimes like to cross with our fashion. The images really bring the collection to life and are an essential part of our communication to the outside world. When choosing shooting locations, I rely heavily on my own experience and listen to my gut feeling - this has so far always led me to the most extraordinary places and resulted in equally extraordinary images.
Could you also imagine having customers from the metal and rock scene, for example, who combine Luis Trenker in a completely different way and thus express their personal lifestyle? I can certainly imagine that, since for example the most successful German rock band Frei.Wild has been one of our fans for years. We generally don't let ourselves be pigeonholed and celebrate the diversity of the people who wear our fashion. Is there a fashion trend that you have never been able to understand? No, because I think every fashion trend has its raison d'être and can look cool in the right combination and for the appropriate occasion. For me, it's just important not to go along with every trend, but to weigh carefully whether it even corresponds to your own personality and style.
What do you see as the special feature of the Luis Trenker brand? Our special feature is the unmistakable style that we have stood for since our founding. This includes fabrics and designs that are developed exclusively for us and are not missing from any collection. What does sustainability mean to you? For me personally, sustainability stands for a conscious and responsible use of the resources we are given, but also for treating each other with respect - and always keeping an eye on what we are setting an example for the next generation. What is more important to you personally, sustainable production, or that the collection pieces are wearable for a long time, can be combined and are of the best quality? For me, these components are closely intertwined: our production is sustainable in that we mainly produce in Italy, as well as in Portugal and Romania, and the transport routes are accordingly short. But the most important thing is definitely the quality, because if this is right and our clothes are worn for decades, it is more environmentally friendly than any sustainable production - and for us the most beautiful confirmation. What are your visions for the future, what do you still want to achieve? I would like to see Luis Trenker continue to grow and help the brand achieve international recognition - but without losing our family character and our original values. I still have many plans and hold on to my dream of one day conquering my favorite city, New York, with Luis Trenker.
Was bedeutet Nachhaltigkeit für Dich?
Long before sustainability became a trend in the fashion industry, Anja Gockel was already focusing on green and fair fashion. For 25 years, the Mainz-based designer has been working according to her own principles, which she questioned once again during the Covid crisis. For Color&Cream, this is a reason to take a look at where we stand in fashion when it comes to sustainability.
What do you think: Do customers now value a craftsmanship, especially production in Germany, more? Is a change in thinking taking place? That is precisely my great hope. However, the big question that arises for me is: Are people also prepared to buy less and spend more on what they purchase? Cheap and sustainable are mutually exclusive. If you as a consumer buy something 50 percent off, you are taking advantage of the company because it no longer earns anything from the product. In the long run, it would then disappear from the market. Or the person who gives the 50 percent discount is taking advantage of the workers because he can afford to give that discount. There is always one in this chain who is exploited one hundred percent! Discount battles are therefore the opposite of sustainability. This is where public relations work is needed to educate consumers. People want to be smart and buy cheap, but this is the stupidity of the people. Because the smart one is the one who creates a change in thinking, who appreciates the value of a product and thus also does something good for himself. This is also balm for the soul. Endless growth is not possible. We have to rethink and combine economy with ecology. As consumers, we should avoid all companies that can't do that. And it's very important that we realize that the power lies with the end consumer. Because the corporations only do what we give them energy for in the form of money. ”The smart one is the one who creates a change in thinking, who appreciates the value of a product and thus also does something good for himself.” To what extent has the 2020 experience influenced your new collection? For 25 years, I have lived and loved sustainability. Nevertheless, in 2020, I personally took another giant leap in the right direction. In all these years, we have never thrown away or not used a meter of fabric. But we have built up a certain stock of fabrics over the years and I have reduced that to a few meters in 2020. Taking purchasing as an example, we usually spend 25,000 euros on new fabrics for the new collection. This season it was only 5,000 euros. Also, I personally think the summer collection ASUKA is so far the most beautiful I've ever made. In the production of this collection, I was completely focused on myself, instead of looking at what others are doing and what's the greatest thing that's hot right now. Instead, I went into my warehouse and looked at what gold I'm sitting on right now ... By the way, the name ASUKA means "the fragrance of tomorrow " in a figurative Japanese sense. The idea behind it is that we should already feel the scent of tomorrow and not forget it, so that in a year's time we will be as we were before Corona. Corona did not bring anything good, but it brought about a state. If we draw the right conclusions from this state, it can have a positive effect on humanity. It depends completely on ourselves. Your new collection is called EMBRACELAND. What is the idea behind it? Embraceland - "the land of embrace" is of course meant ambiguously, since we are not allowed to physically embrace each other at the moment. That is why embrace is moving to the center of our thinking. Before, we did not think about it at all: embracing was like a phrase that had no special meaning. For me, embracing means including the other person. "To embrace a new idea" also means to welcome a new and different idea. I personally find that quite exciting. I also recently had a personal, inner experience about this. I had spent a few days with a psychologist because I had an issue and was always triggered by someone. The solution approach was that I was only triggered because a mirror image was held up to me. By learning to embrace that, I solved the problem within myself. Of course, that only works if you mean it honestly. Our whole inner world is reflected on the outside. That's why the new collection is also called Embraceland: Embrace your outside so that you can solve your inside and become or stay happy. Mental and physical balance is the basis of our happiness. ”Our whole inner world is reflected on the outside.” Has COVID affected the way you work and create ? Are there changes and new ways of thinking for you in the future? Our label has become much more sustainable during this time: We now use every button, every zipper. In the new Embraceland collection, there are skirts with different zippers - still matching, of course - but still very individual. Every piece is different. Something that is made with heart and soul can never have the identical shape or look absolutely the same. Every element that we physically have in the studio is used, giving the collection more uniqueness and value. This also transfers to the customer. The size 34 is different from the size 42, also in terms of type. Thus, each customer has his personal favorite part tailored to him. No one looks the same! For me, this is true love for the product. ”No one looks the same!” In 2020, you were the only one to hold a fashion show live as part of Berlin Fashion Week. Because of the Covid situation, the event took place virtually in January 2021. What means originality and time savings for some represents a lack of emotion for others. How do you see the discussion about the fashion show of the future? I see the fashion show of the future existing both virtually and physically - and on both levels authentically and with a lot of heart. One will get the best out of the respective medium. When encounters are possible again, I look forward to seeing my heart people again. The fact that emotional connections are only possible through physical meetings is due to the DNA of human beings. You can't transfer that to a virtual fashion show or conference. You need personal encounters to create emotional connections. Since 2020, the resale market has been booming. Does that have an impact on the number of pieces in your new collection? We don't produce as much as before. Recycling the stock has become an essential aspect. Pieces from past collections are given new life again in new collections and they are presented in a completely different light. In this way, we don't lose anything and we don't have to throw anything away. In addition, there is no sale with me. Because I stand for my values, I accept that I make less sales in the sale periods. And precisely because "selling off" is out of the question for me, online trade is also out of the question. Online trade only works if you reduce. At the moment, the law of online trade is "stinginess is cool". Only when people's awareness changes will fair sales also work well online. What does fashion mean to you in the new age? Fashion is the expression of my inner strength. Clothing can sometimes also help me when I don't feel so strong inside. It gives me a certain attitude. That's why fashion can be a great support for self-confidence, because it simply makes me feel good. Clothing can't change the inside, but it can be a support, a companion.
