Danielle, where does your creative process as a fashion designer start? I always say as a designer I am constantly inspired by everything around me. So there really is never a start or finish to my creative process. But for each collection my process usually starts by reviewing the newest runway shows, vintage shopping at all my favorite fashion archives, and going through hundreds maybe thousands of fabric swatches that my boss introduces to me from some of the greatest vendors around the world. Then once the vibe, fabrics, and color stories are finalized, I sit down and like to hand draw everything and piece the collection together, which feels like puzzle really, but I am obsessed with the process, and it is so rewarding to see when it all comes to life. At what point did you realize that becoming a fashion designer is a real career path? My dad took me to Paris when I was in seventh grade, and I fell in love with fashion as we strolled down Avenue Montaigne. From that point on I was drawing fashion sketches on the plane ride home and continued to build my dream by taking sewing and fashion illustration classes every weekend at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and would even spend my summers taking design classes at Parsons the New School of Design in New York until I was accepted there to receive my BFA degree in Fashion Design. Do you approach things from a conceptual point of view when you are designing for Chaser ? I would say I approach and design from a conceptual point of view. I have thousands of images, color stories, and moods that I am inspired by and then conceptualize with my own creative vision and bring it all to life. What role does the commercial aspect play for you? After almost 10+ years working in the fashion industry I have learned that you can’t always make everyone happy, but you do your best to cater and appeal to everyone. Chaser Brand is such a great brand because we appeal to such a wide range of ages as our focus is elevated essentials. We make sure to keep in mind when sourcing fabrics that our designs are extraordinarily soft with fits that make you want to continue to own as staples in your closet. Chaser is raised on Rock’n’Roll. Is this your personal passion / lifestyle aswell ? Yes, as a San Francisco native all my friends were in bands and live music was a big part of our lives. I used to even make custom clothing for musicians which eventually led to bigger clients who would perform at festivals like Outside Lands and Coachella. So yes, I would say my personal passions and lifestyle has always been more bohemian and rock n roll influenced Why do you think so many people are afraid of colors? Funny you mention it, I have always loved to design with color but have learned people want to invest in pieces that are closet staples and can be worn year-round. So, I keep in mind more so now when designing to offer more core essential colors as well as the seasons trending colors. Do you remember the first piece of clothing that you designed for Chaser you were really obsessed with? It has officially been one year as Head of Design here at Chaser Brand and I have worked endlessly to get to the point where I am today. I have been experimenting with all of Chaser’s core fabrics and have been sourcing a lot of new fabrics and techniques to bring to the table. So, it is tough to say because my most prized designs are on the way.. But I would say my first piece of clothing that I designed for Chaser that I was obsessed with would be this HO22 sweat set CW9226-CHA7095 & CW9384-CHA7114 as well as a few other graphic tee’s because creative directing graphics is a skill that I am still mastering and it was really exciting to see those original visions come to life. Was it difficult for you to learn to trust your own opinion? Yes, it took many years of designing for multiple brands and honestly even still to this day to learn to fully trust my own opinion when it comes to designing for the masses. As a young designer sometimes, I catch myself over designing styles to stand out and be different, but I have figured out that the most successful designs are easy and people are more attracted to exciting fabric qualities and techniques, so I find myself experimenting on this side of design more so these days.. How do you know when you’ve found an idea that works? I have started to bring all my designs home to wear and see how they feel when worn day to day. I get excited when I find myself gravitating towards wearing my own designs and find it helpful when I want to push ideas that I strongly believe in, and then it is always a good sign when all my friends want to wear or borrow. How would you describe the current state of the fashion industry in general ? The current state of the fashion industry is a bit nerve wrecking, so I am focusing more on designing loungewear and essentials because I believe there is a bigger and more promising market for these categories these days. Where do you get the richest inspirations from ? I get my richest inspirations from shopping both new and vintage. I find it so inspiring to search high and low for items of clothing that stand out and feel one of a kind. I have a very impressive archive clothing collection that I am constantly referencing for all designs. Is it sometimes difficult to then translate those inspirations and ideas to a larger team? No thankfully I have such a great team that really understand me and my visions and help me bring it all to life. So grateful for them! Has the pandemic changed you as a person or your creativity? The pandemic definitely changed my perspective on everyday fashion. I used to really get dressed up every day and would never be caught in sweats or sneakers. But now I find myself collecting and rocking the most exclusive sneakers and dress more casual and comfortable, but in my own fun way that is still true to me and my creativity. Many designers or creative people seem to have a very strong sense of confidence. Is that just a façade? I would say yes and no.. Personally, I am more reserved socially, but feel confident and enjoy standing out when it comes to my sense of style. Are you more intuitive or more analytical when you are designing? Which way works better for you ? I am definitely more intuitive when it comes to designing. I do so much market research that I am on top of or even ahead of trends, so sometimes I have to push my sales reps to believe in concepts of designs because they are obviously more analytical and only see what is selling now. There’s something so fundamentally different about the American cool style specifically from Los Angeles that I think has really been embraced. Nowadays luxury can even mean a sneaker or a sweatshirt. What makes the Chaser style so unique and special? Yes, I agree the California style is really special. I think the coolest people with the most unique style are the ones that do not try so hard to follow trends but set them on their own by being themselves and embracing their own lifestyles. Chaser Brand was born in Los Angeles and was one of the first brands that started producing vintage inspired band tees, so that alone is pretty special and I look forward to keep mastering the craft by designing unique styles that represent music history. What is fashion for you? My definition of fashion is expressing yourself through what you wear. Would you consider yourself someone that lives and breathes fashion? Yes I am obsessed with fashion, it is a blessing and a curse. Is fashion ultimately about emotion? I guess you could say that fashion is ultimately about emotion.. whether you put on an outfit in the morning to mentally channel a successful or productive day or dressing to feel comfortable to have a more relaxing day. We all dress and express ourselves through to how we feel emotionally. Who is a perfect Chaser girl ? I would say the Chaser girl is effortlessly cool, edgy, trendsetting, and obviously a rock n roll lover. Do you like to see people making your clothes part of their own identity ? Yes, I love to see how everyone rocks Chaser in their own ways, very grateful for our customers. Where do you think that people dress the worst? Airports? Banks? Hollywood? Funny, well even though I see a lot of questionable outfits around town I would have to say airport fashion is probably the worst because even the chicest styles will not pull through for comfort when traveling. What is the weirdest collaboration somebody has approached you with so far? Good question! Honestly nothing too crazy yet.
The collection from Chaser is consistently looking forward in fit, fabrication, hand-feel and design. What can we expect next season? I am really excited for the Fall 23 collection because I feel the vibe and mood finally feel the most authentic to the voice of Chaser Brand. The collection is more focused on comfort and everyday essentials but feels edgy and rock n roll inspired as well. From here on out this is what you can expect from Chaser Brand and as well as more novelty rock n roll inspired designs such as sweaters knits and embroidered flannel jackets that we have collaborated on with the Grateful Dead, ACDC, and Pink Floyd so far! Stay tuned for more exciting styles and collaborations coming soon!
Was inspiriert Dich am meisten ? Was bedeutet Mode für Dich? In Flughäfen? Banken? Hollywood?
