You have been an active boxer since 2001, so the first interesting question is, of course, what brought you to boxing? My father brought me to boxing, he was a big boxing fan. A fond childhood memory is that we got up in the middle of the night to watch boxing matches together on TV. At that time it was already clear to me: I want to have such a world championship belt one day. Why do you think boxing is a sport that inspires and excites so many people? The emotions that are evoked in the spectators are unique. A boxing match is always open until it is finally over. For example, a boxer can lead the house on points, yet a single punch can decide the entire fight. The tension remains until the end.
What challenges does a life as a professional boxer bring? You devote 100% of your time to the sport. In boxing, if you don't go into the ring fit, you're quickly punished for it. It's a 1 vs. 1 situation and you can't hide behind a team. Of course, that also means that you have to give 100% in every training session, pay attention to your diet and simply counteract the psychological pressure that weighs on you. How did you come to the attention of Sauerland ? My amateur career was pretty good. In 2012, I was allowed to participate in the Olympic Games and was in the German national team. Of course, the promoters are always up to date and follow everything. Things took their course and at some point the first conversation took place. What is the hardest part of preparing for a boxing match? In my opinion, there are many factors. Paying attention to your diet during tough training sessions and losing weight before fights is often not easy. The hardest challenge is to stay focused in the head and to endure the mental pressure.
Most boxers say that the last minutes before a fight are the worst. What do you feel? Fear? Is a professional boxer afraid in the ring? The "fear" that a boxer has, in my opinion, is failure. Fear of the opponent, the blows or anything else does not exist. The focus to win the fight is in the foreground. Do you have a good luck charm or a ritual before a fight? Just before every fight I think of the most important people in my life. I give each one a few seconds in my head and remember that I want to make them proud. What do you focus on just before the fight? The focus is mostly on tactics. I close my eyes and try to play through the course of the fight in my head. Music always plays during the run-in. Does the song have any meaning for you? Every song that I choose motivates me. But I only pay attention to the feeling that the music gives me. What do you need to defeat an equal opponent? A clear head. It's important that my line holds its own and that I don't let myself get rattled. You know the psychological games from some boxing matches. In 2012 you qualified for the Olympic Games. Did you ever think it was possible ? What was the feeling? I always wished for that. When it really worked out, I was just happy. I think that was the best moment of my boxing career so far. You became World Cup winner in kickboxing in 2015. How come you are on fire for both sports? Have you ever accidentally used a kickboxing punch in a boxing match? My coach was a kickboxing coach, so I started kickboxing. With time everything went so well that at some point we did boxing fights. Just to gain more fight - experience, I did both in parallel for a long time. That brought me a lot. What does the preparation time for a boxing match look like? Are there certain things that you are no longer allowed to eat, for example, or do you even have to cut back in your private life? In preparation I train 2x a day with a 6 - day - week. Sufficient rest periods between the units are important. I go for a walk or go to physiotherapy. The diet is usually already planned at this time. How does a professional athlete like you eat? My nutrition coach puts together a plan for me during important fights and calculates the calories I'm allowed to eat. There is then a percentage of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Back to competition preparation: What exercises are best for getting fit for a competition? A preparation has different phases, e.g. the basics are built up first, then it's about endurance and strength. Then you move on to explosiveness, speed, boxing and the sparring phase. How do you train throughout the year, even if you don't have a fight coming up? Basically I always keep myself fit. Endurance and strength are always part of the program, as are technique and tactics. When there's no fight, it's a good opportunity to work on the finishing touches. What are the biggest challenges in everyday life for you? The biggest challenge is to get everything under one hat. In every area I work in, I just want to do everything right. That's often a bit stressful over time. Do you have a second mainstay, or is your life completely focused on boxing? In the meantime, I have built up a second mainstay. You can't box forever, so I built up a bar and a franchise system with a business partner. Fortunately, it's going well. We keep our fingers crossed for you and wish you all the best and much success on your way to the top! Thank you for the interview and of course I wish you all the best!
Was empfindet man da? Angst?
