How did the idea of making sustainable, traditional bags come about? Woven bags made of different materials have been around for a long time in Mexico. In recent years, some artisans have also started to use recycled plastic for various products such as bags. We had bought such a bag in Mexico a few years ago and used it here in Germany for daily use. Although this had a much simpler construction and was far from beautiful as our bags today, I was regularly asked about it - So for the first time I had the idea that Mexican design and pattern could also find favor here in Germany. Thus began the long search for the right artisans with the best bag construction and the skill to implement according to our ideas very own patterns and colors especially for the German and European market. Especially in terms of colors, the taste here in Germany and Europe is much simpler. In Mexico, on the other hand, it often can't be colorful enough. While researching how exactly these bags are made, I was also immediately fascinated by the idea that new bags are created here from old plastic bags and other plastic waste that I can use every day - whether shopping, at the market, doing yoga, on vacation or at the spa. As we know, especially in Germany the topic of sustainability and in recent years especially the avoidance as well as recycling of plastic plays a central role in society. And so Amor Eterno was born - a mixture of tradition, design and sustainability. What does Amor Eterno stand for ? My endless love for my culture and traditions, as well as my commitment to the environment and my countrymen, have led me to create Amor Eterno. The quality of our bags allows them to last a long time. What materials are your upcycled bags made of or what were they before? The material used for the production of the bags is recycled. It comes from various soft polyethylene (LDPE) plastic products such as bottles, packaging, toys and supermarket bags. These are shredded into small flakes, then melted, pigmented and finally made into the ribbons from which our bags are woven. What role does the topic of sustainability play for you and which aspects do you also implement in your private life? In the past, the topic really didn't play a big role for me. It was only here in Germany that I was fascinated by the fact that it was being discussed and talked about everywhere. But the decisive turning point was the birth of my son 13 years ago and the thoughts of what a future world should look like for him. Certainly not with beaches full of washed up plastic waste like you can already find in Mexico off the hotel beaches today. At home we try to consume plastic-free products, we go to the market twice a week and buy directly from the producer to avoid buying fruits and vegetables in plastic packaging. We like to sell and buy used clothes to give them a long life. We are still far from being able to say that we live 100% sustainably, but we do our best. There is a lot of craftsmanship in your bags. Could you actually have them produced in higher quantities? Of course, handmade has its limits and so the bags will always have a certain exclusivity. Despite the already very good demand, however, we still have room to increase the editions. We have already received inquiries from hotels that would like to use our bags in higher editions with their own patterns and colors for the guests in the spa area. We can also realize something like that. Fortunately, there are still some artisans who have mastered the necessary skills and techniques. It is a craft that is passed down from generation to generation. It motivates me that I can support the artisans and their families to continue doing what they love and in this way preserve our traditions. How traditional is Mexican handicraft? Mexican handicrafts are related to the national identity and indigenous heritage of the country, which is a mixture of European techniques and indigenous designs due to colonization. The often very colorful designs are still very popular today and are not only trendy among tourists. There is a huge variety of art objects, which are made for decorative purposes or, as in the case of our bags, for utilitarian purposes. Have you ever thought of possibly releasing a special edition for Dias De Los Muertos or Frida Kahlo's birthday? Frida Kahlo is undoubtedly a representative of Mexican art, and that's why in Amor Eterno we honor her life by creating accessories with Frida's face together with the artisans in Chiapas. One of the best-selling accessories is undoubtedly our Black Forest Frida. This is a mix of Frida Kahlo and the Black Forest Marie - and therefore the two cultures I love the most. For me it is important that the designs of our bags are classic and timeless. Mexicans are very festive, we have important celebrations throughout the year, the Day of the Dead is undoubtedly one of the most important. Maybe we will take inspiration from this and dedicate a future collection to this date. Which Mexican ritual would you definitely like to keep in Germany? In fact, in Mexico we still like to be superstitious. With a twinkle in my eye and a pinch of humor, I took a few rituals with me to Germany: For example, I bid farewell to the old year by sweeping the house to drive away bad vibes and envy. We also walked around the house with our suitcases on New Year's night which is supposed to ensure good travels and great experiences. As I said, we Mexicans are very creative and have a lot of fun with our rituals. Speaking of the Day of the Dead: Due to some deaths in the family, this year we have planned a small altar to honor our deceased relatives. In addition to the typical colorful decorations, it will feature their favorite foods and drinks - tequila for my grandparents, mole and flowers for my grandmothers, and a glass of water for the souls in pain. What do you wish for the future of your business and for your Mexican partners? I wish that my brand reaches the homes of many people and that our bags and accessories become part of their daily lives, bringing smiles with their beauty. I wish that the artisans who work for Amor Eterno see with pride how far away your craft reaches people and makes them happy. In this way, we create perspectives and opportunities to continue to make a living from crafts in the future and to continue to honor the ancestors through the applied craft practices.
In Deinen Taschen steckt sehr viel Handwerkskunst.
