Long before sustainability became a trend in the fashion industry, Anja Gockel was already focusing on green and fair fashion. For 25 years, the Mainz-based designer has been working according to her own principles, which she questioned once again during the Covid crisis. For Color&Cream, this is a reason to take a look at where we stand in fashion when it comes to sustainability.
What do you think: Do customers now value a craftsmanship, especially production in Germany, more? Is a change in thinking taking place? That is precisely my great hope. However, the big question that arises for me is: Are people also prepared to buy less and spend more on what they purchase? Cheap and sustainable are mutually exclusive. If you as a consumer buy something 50 percent off, you are taking advantage of the company because it no longer earns anything from the product. In the long run, it would then disappear from the market. Or the person who gives the 50 percent discount is taking advantage of the workers because he can afford to give that discount. There is always one in this chain who is exploited one hundred percent! Discount battles are therefore the opposite of sustainability. This is where public relations work is needed to educate consumers. People want to be smart and buy cheap, but this is the stupidity of the people. Because the smart one is the one who creates a change in thinking, who appreciates the value of a product and thus also does something good for himself. This is also balm for the soul. Endless growth is not possible. We have to rethink and combine economy with ecology. As consumers, we should avoid all companies that can't do that. And it's very important that we realize that the power lies with the end consumer. Because the corporations only do what we give them energy for in the form of money. ”The smart one is the one who creates a change in thinking, who appreciates the value of a product and thus also does something good for himself.” To what extent has the 2020 experience influenced your new collection? For 25 years, I have lived and loved sustainability. Nevertheless, in 2020, I personally took another giant leap in the right direction. In all these years, we have never thrown away or not used a meter of fabric. But we have built up a certain stock of fabrics over the years and I have reduced that to a few meters in 2020. Taking purchasing as an example, we usually spend 25,000 euros on new fabrics for the new collection. This season it was only 5,000 euros. Also, I personally think the summer collection ASUKA is so far the most beautiful I've ever made. In the production of this collection, I was completely focused on myself, instead of looking at what others are doing and what's the greatest thing that's hot right now. Instead, I went into my warehouse and looked at what gold I'm sitting on right now ... By the way, the name ASUKA means "the fragrance of tomorrow " in a figurative Japanese sense. The idea behind it is that we should already feel the scent of tomorrow and not forget it, so that in a year's time we will be as we were before Corona. Corona did not bring anything good, but it brought about a state. If we draw the right conclusions from this state, it can have a positive effect on humanity. It depends completely on ourselves. Your new collection is called EMBRACELAND. What is the idea behind it? Embraceland - "the land of embrace" is of course meant ambiguously, since we are not allowed to physically embrace each other at the moment. That is why embrace is moving to the center of our thinking. Before, we did not think about it at all: embracing was like a phrase that had no special meaning. For me, embracing means including the other person. "To embrace a new idea" also means to welcome a new and different idea. I personally find that quite exciting. I also recently had a personal, inner experience about this. I had spent a few days with a psychologist because I had an issue and was always triggered by someone. The solution approach was that I was only triggered because a mirror image was held up to me. By learning to embrace that, I solved the problem within myself. Of course, that only works if you mean it honestly. Our whole inner world is reflected on the outside. That's why the new collection is also called Embraceland: Embrace your outside so that you can solve your inside and become or stay happy. Mental and physical balance is the basis of our happiness. ”Our whole inner world is reflected on the outside.” Has COVID affected the way you work and create ? Are there changes and new ways of thinking for you in the future? Our label has become much more sustainable during this time: We now use every button, every zipper. In the new Embraceland collection, there are skirts with different zippers - still matching, of course - but still very individual. Every piece is different. Something that is made with heart and soul can never have the identical shape or look absolutely the same. Every element that we physically have in the studio is used, giving the collection more uniqueness and value. This also transfers to the customer. The size 34 is different from the size 42, also in terms of type. Thus, each customer has his personal favorite part tailored to him. No one looks the same! For me, this is true love for the product. ”No one looks the same!” In 2020, you were the only one to hold a fashion show live as part of Berlin Fashion Week. Because of the Covid situation, the event took place virtually in January 2021. What means originality and time savings for some represents a lack of emotion for others. How do you see the discussion about the fashion show of the future? I see the fashion show of the future existing both virtually and physically - and on both levels authentically and with a lot of heart. One will get the best out of the respective medium. When encounters are possible again, I look forward to seeing my heart people again. The fact that emotional connections are only possible through physical meetings is due to the DNA of human beings. You can't transfer that to a virtual fashion show or conference. You need personal encounters to create emotional connections. Since 2020, the resale market has been booming. Does that have an impact on the number of pieces in your new collection? We don't produce as much as before. Recycling the stock has become an essential aspect. Pieces from past collections are given new life again in new collections and they are presented in a completely different light. In this way, we don't lose anything and we don't have to throw anything away. In addition, there is no sale with me. Because I stand for my values, I accept that I make less sales in the sale periods. And precisely because "selling off" is out of the question for me, online trade is also out of the question. Online trade only works if you reduce. At the moment, the law of online trade is "stinginess is cool". Only when people's awareness changes will fair sales also work well online. What does fashion mean to you in the new age? Fashion is the expression of my inner strength. Clothing can sometimes also help me when I don't feel so strong inside. It gives me a certain attitude. That's why fashion can be a great support for self-confidence, because it simply makes me feel good. Clothing can't change the inside, but it can be a support, a companion.
